Pre-testing tips for accuracy

  • Always wash your hands and be sure they are dry before testing.
  • Don’t use expired test strips or ones that are not intended for your specific device.
  • Make sure you apply enough blood to the sample area on the test strip.
  • Since all blood glucose meters are different, you should refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on proper use.

How to use these blood glucose log sheets

  1. First, record your doctor-recommended target blood glucose ranges for fasting, pre-meal, and post-meal tests. There’s a space for this in the top right corner. If you’re unsure of your specific target ranges, start with the suggested target ranges from the American Diabetes Association for most non-pregnant adults with diabetes:
    • Before a meal: 80–130 mg/dl
    • 1-2 hours after beginning of the meal: Less than 180 mg/dl
  2. Fill in the date for the beginning of the month, week, or day that you are testing.
  3. Test your blood glucose with a meter, record the time, and enter the result in the space marked “Blood Sugar.”
  4. Because the amount of carbohydrates eaten can have an effect on blood sugar levels, count and record the number of carbs for that mealtime in the space marked “Carbs.”
  5. Record if any medications that reduce blood sugar were taken.
  6. Use the “Comments” section to record any factors that may have contributed to your readings, like activity levels, diet, stress, or sickness.
  7. You can also briefly note how you are feeling after each test, as this will help you and your doctor determine the best target ranges for your blood glucose.
